Meet The New Boss, Same As The Old Boss?

XBIZ - APRIL 2010

As virtually every veteran adult entertainment businessperson knows, the industry that was formerly characterized as “recession proof”, has been reeling from the combined effects of a depressed economy, rampant piracy and a glut of free legal content. In response, many adult entertainment companies are evolving their business models to meet the challenges presented by the current environment. But in addition to economic pressures, adult companies are now beginning to face new challenges and new opportunities that are presented by whole host of new technologies and technological improvements poised to redefine how adult entertainment is created and monetized, and perhaps, even defined. Innovations such as IPTV, 3D video, 3D worlds, tactile devices, mobile video and mobile location-based apps are already beginning to impact the industry. Meanwhile, all this is happening against the backdrop of unprecedented social acceptance of adult content on a planetary scale, that just keeps growing and producing additional challenges and opportunities for the industry such as the exploding phenomenon of user-generated porn and a plethora of sex-centric social networks.

The Flat Web Is Dead, Long Live The Avatars (And The IP Rights Therein)

I say this because both the story’s concept of a remotely controllable personal avatar in a strange world, and the immersive computer generated imagery technology used to make the movie, are rapidly becoming integral parts of the virtual worlds phenomenon that many believe will dominate the next phase of the Internet.

Virtual World Phenomenon Gets The Government’s Attention
XBIZ - February 2010

A recently published study by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) entitled “Virtual Worlds and Kids: Mapping the Risks” is yet another sure sign that massively multiuser virtual environments (“MMVEs”) are rapidly growing in popularity and importance.

The report, released in December, was the result of a congressional directive to the FTC last March to conduct a study of online virtual worlds to examine the methods virtual world operators use to restrict minors’ access to explicit content available in virtual worlds. Accordingly, the FTC surveyed the explicit content offerings in 27 online virtual worlds.
